Abstract | The ‘Barbarian’ peoples that lived in the border of China often increased their power by the diplomatic policy of the Jimí 覊縻 in China. Particulary during periods of political confusion in China, they... had their most advantageous opportunity to extend their political influence into China. But, with the advent of powerful centralized authoritarian rule in China, their political reaction assumed one of the three following patterns : they either entered into the political system of China and became officials, or they gained their independence and founded their own state, or they were united by the most powerful of the ‘Barbarian’ peoples. In the case of the Tungut 党項 during the Five and the Northern Sung Dynasties, Zhé-Shì in Fŭ-Chou followed the first pattern. Li-Shì 李氏 in Hsia-shou 夏州 who founded the State of His-Hsìa 西夏, the second pattern, and the peoples united by the Kingdom of Liao 遼, the third pattern. This thesis deals with the reason why Zhé-Shì in Fŭ-Chou during the Five and the Northern Sung Dynasties entered official life in China.show more |
