Abstract |
The town planning of Hakata was practised, 1587, by Toyotomi Hideyoshi. Then, and now also, the roads run across at right angle, and one side of every town section was measured 200 Shaku, and the othe...r 400 Shaku. In the capital city planning at ancient Japan, Nara as well as Kyoto was constituted with 400 shaku square sections. This is the fundamental idea of the Jobo system in Japan. After he re terned from Kyushu to Kyoto, Hideyoshi reconstructed a new city on the ruined capital Kyoto By the same idea as Hakata planning, the new city Kyoto was built in the center part of the ancient capital. and the city was surrounded by the new earthen bank called "Odoi" When Hideyoshi stayed at Hakata, I imagine, he hoped to reconstruct the ancient Japanese city on one hand Hakata, on the other hand Kyoto. At the end of medieval era, Hideyoshi's planning was considered as typical one. In the early years of the foundation of Edo, the same section planning and the same road system were adopted. In the last part of this article, I mentioned an example of local town with some resemblance to the medieval Kyoto's plan. It was Kokubu, a fudal town founded by SyimazuYoshihisa, in Osumi, near the southernmost Kyushu.show more
