Abstract Most of studies about the regional convergence are centered on cross-section, temporal analysis or panel data models, but few of them consider the effect of the space properties. To identify and measu...re the spatial effect it is mandatory to start by establishing the spatial links between regions that might affect the economic interactions. In this article we analyze the process of convergence between the Japanese prefectures from a spatial viewpoint. Japan is an interesting case since the country is conformed for islands, where to establish the spatial links properly is crucial. Secondly, the Japanese prefectures are well connected by their roads, railways, airlines, and telecommunications, so it seems natural to think that prefectures have strong links. Finally, by using a Spatial Panel Data we find evidence of β-convergence once we incorporate the spatial effect into the equation. On the other hand, the Moranʼs I statistic shows unstable spatial connection of the GDP per capita between prefectures since 1955 to 2014.show more
