Abstract | This study is intended to reveal the functions of speech level shift in the discourse of Japanese instructors, which appears in a public scenario. Speech level shifts in Japanese refers to a shift fro...m“ desumasu” form to “non-desu-masu” form and a shift from “non-desu-masu” form to “desu-masu” form. In order to clarify the function of speech level shift, this research uses a spoken corpus of Japanese teachers, which specifically contains the discourse of Japanese classes and special scenes of Japanese learning in terms of the occurrence situation and functions of speech level shift in detail. The current study used the data from 23 class meetings from the corpus. The analysis yielded several conditions under which speech level shifts occur in discourse, including psychological changes of the speaker and a change in the perception of the speaker regarding the listeners. This study also analyzed discourse structure in a Japanese class and speech level shifts from the perspective of “semantic paragraphs” (Sakuma 2006). The analysis found two functions of speech level shift: paragraph-internal connection and paragraph-external connection. Such a shift occurs not only by one condition, but by several conditions that exist at the same time. In this way, Japanese native speakers send various messages to the listeners by shifting the speech level. These results contribute to a better understanding of Japanese discourse as well as to teaching Japanese as a second language, especially in the use of appropriate style in spoken discourse.show more |
