Abstract Parliamentary debate(PD) has been spreading rapidly. It is thought that it improves abilities of impromptu public speaking and effective oral presentation and it invokes interests in social problems. ...However, there are few reports on educational impacts of PD. To investigate it, I conducted two interviews to students/graduates of English Speaking Society(ESS) who are/were involved in PD. In one interview, I asked the abilities they acquired through it. The results indicate that PD is effective to improve various things including, but not limited to, presentation skills, critical thinking skills and the ability to accept others. I also found the experience of PD is effective not only while at school but also in the society. In the other interview, I asked the change of the TOEFL-ITP score of ESS students, which showed PD has high possibility to contribute to improve their English ability. The uniqueness of PD is students could improve previous mentioned skills simultaneously. In conclusion, PD has a strong affinity to general education course in universities, as PD could give students a basis of professional education and research.show more
