Abstract Writing and presentation skills are both important domains for academic learning, especially in higher education, as well as preparing for becoming a member of society. Although there have been variou...s studies that have attempted to clarify the learning process involved in educating students in these skills effectively, they have focused on each skill separately and have not considered the relationships between them. This paper proposes argumentation education as a basis for the development of writing and presentation skills and their effects. This program was introduced in two subject areas: “Basic presentation” and “Basic rhetoric” in intensive courses at Kyushu University, 2018. These subjects shared a common basis in argumentation education, such as the point of persuasion, matter and manner, and the transboundary arena. A pre- and post-survey of the rubric revealed the statistically meaningful effect of all items in both subjects. Furthermore, the students who took both classes achieved higher evaluations in the domain “A: knowledge and understanding” during the pretest of basic rhetoric than those who only took normal classes. These results indicated the importance of these skills for grasping the whole picture and developing learning in a range of subject areas.show more
