Ginhgo biloba and bamboo extracts are stuffs rich in polyphenols, ln this study, we examined effects of Ginkgo biloba and bamboo extracts on lipid metabolism and immune function in Sprague-Dawley rats, Rats were fed diets with extract powders corresponded to O,1% polyphenols, After three weeks feeding, serum lipid parameters, fatty acid composition of liver lipids and immunoglQbulin productivity were measured, On growth parameters, the weight of liver was higher while the weight of internal adipose tissues was lower in Ginkgo biloba extract group compared with control group, The other significant effects on growth parameters were not observed by any bamboo extract feeding against control group, On serum lipid parameters, bamboo extract 2 increased the serum HDL-cholesterol level, and Ginhgo biloba extract decreased the serum TG level, TBARS shows a terminal product of lipid peroxidation, and PCOOH/PC shows an initial peroxidation on lipid membrane, Although Ginkgo biloba extract increased the liver TBARS level, it did not affect serum TBARS level and significantly decreased PCOOH/PC level in liver and serum, Bamboo extracts did not affect the liver and serum TBARS level, but decreased PCOOH/PC level, Arachidonic acid (20:4 n-6) levels were comparable in the liver phospholipids and neutral lipids among all the dietary groups, Stearic acid (18:0) levels were remarkably higher in Ginkgo biloba extract group compared with control group, On immune function, bamboo extract 3 enhanced lgG and IgM productivities of spleen lymphocytes, and it was suggested that the increase of lg productivity by spleen lymphocytes contribute to the elevation of serum lg level, These results indicate that flavonoids derived from Ginkgo biloba or bamboo extracts play different roles in lipid metabolism and immune function in vivo, The results in high weight of liver and low weight of internal adipose tissues by Ginkgo biloba extract feeding might contribute to liver function and lipid metabolism, Moreover, the enhancement on lg productivity of spleen lymphocytes by bamboo extract 3 feeding might be useful for activation of host-immunity.
