The rural land use planning is directly related to the sustainable development of agriculture. To make clear the outcomes of the planning, regional characteristics and regional resourceS should be evaluated with some analytical methods. In this report, GIS (Geographic lnformation System) was applied for classifying the conserved level of each area in Minamiarima Town in Nagasaki prefecture. First, natural conditions and sociological conditions are specified on every nodal points of mesh size 50m on the map. Second, the third kind quantificaleion theory was applied for characterizing the agricultural land, using the various data related to each farmland. The result of this analysis was used to establish the plan for zoning the town into five specific area. The five zones are composed of the areas superior to agriculture, small-scale reclamation is required for the agricultural use, large-scale reclamation is required for the agricultural use, superior to the landscape conservation and the areas which have some difficulties for the agricultural use and recommended to another land usages. The planners who have not enough experiences would effectively use the analytical technique reported here.
