Minamiarima is one of the towns classified into hilled area in Nagasaki prefecture. Agriculture production is the basic economical activity of this district. But this town is suffering the increasing number of aged farmers and the decreasing tendency of the whole population. Moreover, the insufficient conditions of agricultural infrastructure are accelerating the regional problems toward the undesirable situations. To promote the people's participation to the project for improving rural environment, some new trials were conducted. First, the natural environment, the convenience of the daily lives and agricultural productivity potential were precisely investigated to know the conditions prevailing today and the problems to be improved. Second, some questionnaires to the residents were conducted to obtain the information of their desire. Third, opinions were collected through interviewing the residents. As the farmers recognize the multi-functions of the farmland, they are intending to continue their agricultural activities for protecting those farmlands. The improvement of the agricultural infrastructure and keeping the number of farmers seems to be the most important items. The government action of subsidy started recently would be effective to suppress the tendency of decreasing the farmland.
