Abstract The authors have proposed a new seismic retrofitting method for existing RC frame by compressive CFT brace. The features of the proposed retrofitting method are as follows: easy setting, effective enh...ancement of the strength and effective enhancement of the stffness. But there are some disadvantages. One is that the effect of the retrofit is available for only one direction. The other is that the energy dissipating performance is poor. In order to improve these disadvantages, the authors add a new device to the previous brace and conduct the statically lateral loading tests. The added device is made by Φ 13 steel bars and acts against the tensile force of the brace. The authors fabricated four frame specimens which were one-bay and one-story portion of the one-half scaling model of RC school building out of law, and retrofitted by the diagonal CFT brace for all of the fame specimens. Tests were carried out by varying the tensile device of the brace and the detail of the joint portion of the brace. From the result of the tests, it was confirmed that the improvement of the energy absorbing capacity by the added device.show more
