Abstract The effects of raining sounds on the mobility of the visually impaired were investigated from various points of view. Questionnaire survey showed that raining sounds actually disturbed listening to au...ditory signals and environmental sounds providing effective information of places and directions for the blind, and caused several accidents of the visually impaired, such as traffic accidents and downfalls. In particular, hitting sounds of rain on umbrella were considered the most disturbing sound for mobility of the blind. To clarify the acoustic features of the hitting sounds of rain on umbrella, their A-weighted sound pressure was measured. The environmental noise in the slightly heavy rain condition was about 15 dB higher than that for fine weather days. To support the mobility of the visually impaired on rainy days, the development of umbrellas which emit softer sounds when being hit by rainfall should also contribute to more secure environments for visually impaired.show more
