Abstract The objective of this study is to demonstrate the structural function of sound in films directed by Yasujiro Ozu. In this paper, however, only sounds that are played as sound effects in the films are ...discussed. Ozu uses a preponderance of certain specific sound effects. They are used not only in one single film but also repeatedly in several of this films. The preponderant sounf effects played by Ozu ar identified, their denotative mianings are clarified, and then interpretations are made of connotative meanings of the sound effects. FOr example, the sound of the typewriter that is often heared in films by Ozu symbolizes the post-war economic development and is indicative of the emergence of women in the workplace. The views held by these women about marriage are transforming, and the typists who are the female protagonists in Ozu films are not disposed to marry in the way their parents order. Thus arises discord in the family. The sound of the typewriter functions as sound foreshadoweing the family discord. In this paper, the structural functions of other sound effects will further also be made manifest. In this way the importace of sounds in films by Ozu, which has not previously been discussed, will be indicated.show more
