Abstract The community schools (CS) is expected to facilitate interactive community revitalization and to improve environmental adaptability and human relationships for childhood development. We therefore cond...ucted a questionnaire survey of children at an elementary CS actively involved with community collaboration. Based on our findings, children, who had previously not been exposed sufficiently to human-human interacions and interactive participation in community activities due to avoidance of community interaction by their parents, cultivated feelings of security and trust with the inhabitants and community; they were able to enjoy outdoor activities, harbored community pride and love, and showed an affirmative understanding of the regional environment. Childhood development was more constructively and positively molded in the present CS community than in children in non-CS communities, through active collaboration, mutual child-adult interaction and construactive participation of CS inhabitants.show more
