Potential soil water repellency in the Ochozu Experimental Watershed dominated by a Japanese cypress (Chamaecyparis obtusa) plantation

Abstract ヒノキ人工林が優先する御手洗水試験流域において土壌の潜在的な撥水性の空間変動性を把握するため, 流域内の東向き斜面の上部, 中部, 下部, 谷部において土壌試料を採取し, エタノール溶液滴下試験を行った。その結果, 斜面の上部, 中部, 下部の表層土壌(深度 : 0-2 cm, 2-5 cm)において撥水性が観測された。それらの撥水性強度は「none」から「very strong」までの範囲に及ん...だ。一方, 谷部では撥水性は観測されなかった。撥水性試験に供した土壌試料を観察した結果, 撥水性強度の高い土壌試料ほど小鱗片状のヒノキの落葉が多く混入している様子がみられた。このことから, ヒノキ林では, 土壌中のヒノキの落葉の含有量が撥水性の発現を規定する主な要因であることが予想された。
To evaluate the spatial variability of potential soil water repellency in the Ochozu Experimental Watershed dominated by a Japanese cypress (Chamaecyparis obtusa) plantation, 'Molarity of an Ethanol Droplet' test was examined for soil samples collected at the upper, middle, lower and bottom parts of east-facing hillslope in the watershed. Ptential soil water repellency was observed for the surface soils (0-2 and 2-5 cm depths) at the upper, middle and lower parts and their strengths of water repellency ranged from 'none' to 'very strong'. On the other hand, potential soil water repellency was not observed for the soils at the bottom part. It was observed by eye that the soil samples of stronger water repellency appear to include larger amounts of litter leaves of Japanese cypress. Therefore, it is predicted that the content of litter leaves of Japanese cypress in the soils is a critical factor causing soil water repellency in a Japanese cypress plantation.
