熊本・五高教授時代、夏目漱石（金之助）は端艇部長であった。その時に端艇部員であった五高生徒が、飲食店で支払いきれない多額の借金を負ったため、漱石に相談したところ、漱石は百円という巨額を生徒に与えて、自分は端艇部長を辞めてしまったと、『五高人物史』や『五高七十年史』に記されている。しかし事実ではなかろう。なぜならその夏、漱石は実父の死去にともなって帰京しており、生徒たちとの接点は全くなかったし、辞任...したとされる９月はちょうど部長の任期が終わった交代時期に過ぎなかった。この記述は、漱石と同僚であった篠本二郎教授が書き残した証言に基づいている。その篠本は、一方で、自分は漱石と小学校同級であって、机を並べて勉強したなかだとも書いている。だが実際には二人は4歳もちがっており、入学した学校もちがっている。ただのちに漱石が転校した先は、篠本がかつて卒業した小学校であった。同窓ではあるが、同時期ではなく、同級ではない。篠本が「漱石と同窓だ」といえば、聞き手が勝手に同級生と解釈するから、逆手に取ったのであろう。ほかの篠本証言も疑わしい点が多く、信頼はできない。篠本の文章は広く引用されて、全集にも収録されているのだが、彼の友人を漱石に仮託しただけの創作である。
Soseki (Kin-nosuke) Natsume was the president of the boat club as the professor of Kumamoto Goko. One of his students, a club member, asked for Natsume’s advice when he was in debt to the food shop for too much money he cannot pay. Mr. Natsume gave him an enormous sum of money of 100-yen and then quit the president. This story is contained in “Goko Jinbutsu Shi” (Book on Historical Persons in Goko), and “Goko 70-nen Shi” (Seventy Years History of Goko). However, it is not true because Mr.Natsume was not in Kumamoto then and had no chance to be with his students. He was back to Tokyo for his father’s death. Besides, he resigned the president in September when his term is over for replacement. The story is based on the witness that Jiro Sasamoto wrote.
Mr. Sasamoto also noted that Soseki and he were in the same grade of the same primary school and learned in the class side by side. Actually, he was four years older than Soseki. Mr. Sasamoto entered the different school from the school Soseki went. Seseki, then moved to the school where he was. When Mr. Sasamoto said he graduated from the same school as Soseki, everyone who heard this might just think he was Soseki’s classmate. That was his rhetoric. His other comments also had a lot of doubtful points, and we cannot trust them. They are widely quoted in many books and collected works, but they were only fictions where he pretended Soseki was his classmate.続きを見る
