Abstract | This research aims to clarify the setting goals of learning outcomes in legal education comparing between faculties of law and law schools in the view of the structure and importance of competencies. ...In Europe, it trends to set the reference standard in each field, and I think that higher education in Japan should review what competencies students could acquire in respond to each degree in field. In 2004, law schools were established, and many faculties of law carried out their educational reform because faculties of law didn’t have to provide educational programmes for legal profession. But many faculties of law don’t have an explicit policies what competencies university students should acquire in their school life. Therefore, I took a questionnaire survey among deans of faculties of law and managers of academic affairs section in 111 universities and 62 law schools, and had an interview. I review 3points as follow, (1) Does faculties of law and law schools focus on acquiring generic competencies? (2) Which competencies are programmes in faculties of law and law schools focused on acquiring in school life? (3) Which educational methods are appropriate to attain their learning outcomes? As a result, this research indicates that there are commonality of the competency structure, and there are differencies of goal setting of competencies between faculties of law and law schools because the former have to consider a diversity of workplace after completing universities, the latter put an focus on legal profession. Faculties of law and law schools should provide their programmes which are necessary for students in each level to be active in their social life after completing schools.show more |
