Abstract The author started to organize a course on movies in the framework of general education of Kyushu University in the year 1996 and has ever since provided Kyushu University students with an opportunity... to have more access to movies with established reputation, especially Japanese works produced in the past. The organizer, however, was not a specialist on the cinema or film education. Therefore, he has constantly tried to consider in an objective manner whether it is truly beneficial to popularize artistic movies, especially Japanese earlier screen productions, among Japanese university students. The author conducted a questionnaire survey in this regard in the year 2001 focusing on the familiarity of the students of the movie course with the Japanese film classics in the past years and claimed that the young students at that time were quite ignorant of the basics of the history of the Japanese cinema. He repeated the survey in the year 2010, giving due attention to Akira Kurosawa, in order to compare the two sets of data. The comparison indicates a distinctive shift from foreign films to Japanese movies, which could probably be better ascribed to the decrease of foreign movies and the increase of Japanese ones released in Japan during the past decade than to the college students' enhanced movie appreciation. More importantly, the comparison also tells us that the students' familiarity with Japanese film classics has suffered a sharp drop. It is the case that even Kurosawa is less known now. The results lead us, therefore, to the conclusion that it is worthwhile to continue on the movie course devoted to time-honored films which have been added to the glorious history of Japanese cinema.show more
