The meaning and functions of place of values education : a case of school adopting Human Values-based Education

Abstract | Values education aims to cultivate values which are used as guides to ‘good’ behavior in decision making or evaluation of action under globalization and diversification of values in modern society. Co...nsidering that children gain values in such society, a place should be a critical factor of values education. In this paper, we consider meaning and functions of a place of values education through a case of school, T-School, adopting Human Values-based Education (HVE). HVE aims to bring out Human Values, which are inherent, desirable and respected qualities of a human being, from within of children. T-school was established in 1992, Thailand, as a boarding school with children from elementary to high school, with the aim to provide HVE. T-School follows Thai National Curriculum integrated HVE into, in which teaching techniques such as Silent Sitting, Prayers, Story Telling, Group Singing and Group Activities are used in order to bring out Human Values. According to interviews with graduates of T-School about influence of HVE on them, graduates who still do what they have learnt through HVE as influence even after leaving T-School have had experience of trying to do it and realized the value of it at T-School. In the case of T-School, children have to independently solve problems encountered in their daily life at T-School because of living apart from their parents, and, furthermore, their ways of solving problems are oriented by HVE. These, unintentionally, make T-School a place where children can have enough opportunities to realize the values of what are learn through HVE by experience, and then, it should be functions of a place for values education. And relationship with diversity of people is also an important factor for a place of values education. It makes experience of children rich and diverse, and helps graduates to do what they have learnt through HVE in society they belong to after leaving T-School.show more |
