Abstract Intercultural sensitivity, one of the significant capabilities that can help people to engage in intercultural communication successfully, has garnered attention in many disciplines. There are various... studies focusing on measuring intercultural sensitivity using Chen and Starosta’s scale ‒ Intercultural Sensitivity Scale (ISS) ‒ in both western and eastern countries (Chen and Starosta, 2000; Fritz, Möllenberg, & Chen, 2002; Balakrishnan, 2015; Cuciureanu and Saini, 2012; Tamam, 2010; Del Villar, 2010; Wu, 2015). However, there is a scarcity of intercultural sensitivity studies in Japan, a nearly-homogeneous country that is becoming more multicultural due to internationalization. Considering the research gaps, using a highly international sample for the study taking place in Japan needs to be extensively explored. For this reason, this study attempts to measure international students’ level of intercultural sensitivity using ISS. A total of 120 international students (44 countries) studying in Kyushu University participated in this study by completing self-administered questionnaires. The findings show that the level of intercultural communication differs based on the area, gender, age, and international exposure (number of culturallydifferent friends and living abroad experience). Furthermore, the findings reveal five variables that moderately correlate with the intercultural sensitivity level: area, age, length of stay in Japan, number of culturally-different friends and number of foreign countries visited. In order to generate richer and more representative findings, the study needs participants from more varied cultural backgrounds and demographic profiles.
(Chen and Starosta,2000 ; Fritz, Möllenberg, & Chen, 2002; Balakrishnan, 2015; Cuciureanu and Saini, 2012; Tamam, 2010 ;Del Villar, 2010 ; Wu, 2015)。
