A Study Regarding the Grammaticalization of the Discourse Marker "qi shi" in Chinese Compared to the Japanese "jitsu ha"

| Abstract | This paper analyzed the use of the Chinese adverb “qi shi” in natural conversation and, using the grammaticalization model advocated by Traugott, compared the grammaticalization of it with the Japanes...e “jitsu ha” . The results show that “qi shi” is used very frequently in natural conversation, with the meaning being very similar to the English “in fact” or “actually” . Through the process of grammaticalizaion, cases where “qi shi” is used to express subjective emotions, opinions and evaluations are numerous. Additionally, “qi shi” is also frequently used with “wo juede” which is thought to be a stance marker in Chinese. Thus, compared to “jitsu ha” , the subjectivity of “qi shi” is high. Moreover, compared with “qi shi” , the usage of Japanese “jitsu ha” is low. While there is subjective use, it is not commonly used to express subjectivity in Japanese conversation. In addition, while “qi shi” has been developed as an expression used as a fi ller, it is clear that the grammaticalization of “qi shi” is relatively advanced. This paper made the diff erence in usage and the degree of grammaticalization between “qi shi” and “jitsu ha” clear.
