6 Main Factors of Discomfort Foreign Students Feel in Their First Job in Japan

| Abstract | Population decline is expected in Japan in the future. It is vital that the Japanese government promotes positive employment for exchange students in Japanese companies to generate a stable labor forc...e and profits in Japan. This essay considers and compares the main cultural factors that cause discomfort to foreign students in Japan in comparison to native Japanese university students when they start working. Questionnaires were answered by: 1）52 exchange students both with the approximate Japanese language ability of about N1 and with working experience in Japan; and 2）59 native Japanese university students with working experience that was not full-time experience. The aim of this survey is to analyze the factors of discomfort and to find the solution in order to reduce anxiety experienced by the exchange students in workplace in Japan. According to the answers collected, there were 86 uncomfortable experiences reported by exchange students and 103 by Japanese university students. These cases provide the following 2 findings. First, specifi c discomfort experienced by exchange students is classified into six categories. “Japanese traditional customs and institutions” , “Japan’s unique corporate constitution” , “disrespectful treatment” , “too-strict attitude towards work”, “interpersonal relationships with seniors and bosses” and “interpersonal relationships with co-workers.” Second, it is suggested that “excessive hierarchical relationship” and “ambiguous instruction” were commonly perceived as discomforting to both groups surveyed.show more |
