Abstract In recent studies, the usage of ko-series discourse demonstratives is described as “direct knowledge” (Kuroda1979), “ It is specific for the speaker ” (Horiguti1978).However in their theories, it is di...fficult to explain some example sentences. Previous studies have paid much attention on the usage of ko-series discourse demonstratives, but the answer is still unclear. The usage of discourse demonstratives is decided by the speaker. The speaker processes the language by mental monitor structure. Language is closely related to the human mental monitor structure. Kinsui(1999:67)said that “I shall argue that the core notion of ko, and a are deictic, in the sense that the expressions with these demonstrative prefixes make direct reference to an entity whose existence is recognized by the speaker prior to the discourse session in question, while that of so is not”. The basic meaning of the exophoric use is “close to the speaker”. In this paper, cognitive research methods are employed to argue the usage of ko-series discourse demonstratives and the speaker’s recognition of the notion “nearly”. In addition, it points out some problems in current researches. The basic method for the usage of ko-series discourse demonstratives is based on the knowledge that is required in the context .show more
