Abstract | Differences between Japanese and Chinese homographs have long been a topic of contrastive linguistic research into the two languages. However, studies into differences between their emotive meanings a...re still not easy to find. This thesis will focus on three elements that may influence the emotive meaning of Japanese and Chinese homographs: differences in the objects that the word describes, differences in nuance, and for words with opposing meanings, the frequency with which each definition is used. These factors will be analyzed by comparing the meanings of example words in three dictionaries against how they appear in corpuses. This thesis focuses on words that have positive meanings in Japanese and negative meanings in Chinese.show more |
