Abstract This paper has gathered examples of the first and last sentence in Japanese and Chinese newspaper editorials, and analyzed their corresponding relationship to the headlines. A summary of the results h...as been provided below. (1)There were three types of relationship observed between the opening and closing sentence. (A) Presentation of fact in the first sentence, and presentation of opinion in the last sentence, (B)presentation of opinion in the first sentence, and presentation of opinion in the last sentence, and (C)the posing a question in the first sentence, and answering the question in the last sentence. All three variants (A), (B), and (C) were seen in Japanese newspaper editorials, while only two (A) and (C) were found in Chinese editorials. This means that type (B), a format that sees the writer’s opinion presented at the beginning and end of the text, was not found in Chinese newspapers. (2)In terms of the relationship between the first sentence, last sentence and headline, there are many headlines seen with a (b) “a last sentence that specifies content”, as well as alongside (d) “a first and last sentences that do not specify content”. A much smaller number are seen with (a) “a first sentence that specifies content” and (c) “first and last sentences that specify content”. The headline of a newspaper editorial often expresses opinions. As such, many headlines are seen with (b) “a last sentence that specifies content”. In addition, headlines coupled with (d) “first and last sentences that specify content” were often found positioned just before the last sentence (in 80% of passages). (3)Newspaper editorial headlines consist of two parts. The first focuses on the subject matter, while the second half consists of opinions and points of view. The first section presents the topic that is laid out in the opening sentence, leaving the latter to state the thoughts and views that appear in the last sentence. (4)The print media, such as newspaper editorials have limited space on the page. In order to catch the eye and appeal to the reader, Japanese newspapers tend to place emphasis at the beginning of the article, while their Chinese counterparts tend to put stress on the end.show more
