Abstract International students face various challenges, such as the language barrier and culture shock when faced with a new intercultural society. The construction of friendships is closely related to interc...ultural adaptation for international students. Prior studies, especially those conducted in Japan, have seen researchers only focus on social networks between international students and local people. This approach tends to treat all international students as one group, irrespective of their home country. Given this trend, it is important to reveal the friendship structures that exist not just between students from abroad and their Japanese counterparts, but also those that have been formed within the community of international students. The purpose of this study is to investigate what kinds of friendships have been forged by Chinese students, who account for more than 40% of all international students in Japan. There was a specific focus on friendships in and across three groups: 1) amongst Chinese international students, 2) between Chinese international students and Japanese students, 3) between Chinese international students and international students from other countries. The results suggest that the kind of friendships developed by Chinese international students differ depending on the nationality of their companions. Most Chinese international students affirm and express their cultural origins, spend leisure time, and seek emotional support from other Chinese international students, but not Japanese students or international students from other countries.show more
