Abstract This research analyzes everyday speech to help better understand how people respond to compliment actions in Chinese and Japanese. A total of eight easy to understand encounters from common scenarios ...that appear in TV series were used for the data. 34 Chinese and 33 Japanese individuals were then surveyed. The results reveal that both individuals with Japanese and Chinese as their mother tongue greatly value their relationship with the other party, but differences in their respective means of expressing feelings can sometimes lead to misunderstandings. It is evident that most misunderstandings are not born out of existing, underlying feelings, but often from incorrectly interpreting acts of consideration, specifically compliments, responses to praise, attempts to show humility, and shyness. Therefore, in situations when Japanese native speakers interact with their Chinese counterparts, an ability to understand how consideration is expressed by the other side will ensure smoother communication and ultimately the construction of better human relationships.show more
