Abstract This paper develops a scale to measure perceptions of inochi, a term applied to children, and examines the development of and gender differences in the perceptions. A questionnaire based on the semant...ic differential method was used. After an investigation of three factors and thirteen items, perceptions of inochi were found to be positive. The investigation showed that inochi is more similar in concept to "life" than to death. Additionally, significant differences were found in the potency factor, which was measured with three adjective-pairs: "heavy-light", "deep-shallow", and "complicated-simple". As children become older, they regard inochi as heavier, deeper, and more complicated. Further, females regard it as heavier and more complicated than do males. The development of the image is discussed from the perspective of cognitive development and bereavement experience. Gender differences are discussed from the perspective of differences in the attitude toward death.show more
