Abstract |
Attention narrowing refers to the focusing of visual attention on information at the center of a scene arousing negative emotions. This is a process that impairs the recognition of peripheral informat...ion. The effect of the strength of fixation to central and peripheral information on recognition memory for information was investigates. Participants viewed a sequence of pictures containing one critical picture that arouse negative emotions while the experimenter monitored their eye movements by using an eye mark recorder. After viewing the pictures, the participants were asked if they recognized detailed information on them. The results indicated that information was recognized better when participants fixated more and for a longer duration. These results suggest that not only the number of fixations, but also the viewing time influences the encoding of detailed information on pictures arousing negative emotions.show more
