Abstract The Aixuan School was one branch of the Southern Song Dynasty’s Confucian School. Established by Guangchao Lin, they did not adhere to the classics or interpretations of old texts, but instead paid at...tention to Confucian practices, without laying emphasis on prior studies. This paper will discuss 1)the Putian and Fuqing areas in Fujian where the Aixuan School prospered, and 2) historical materials relating to the Aixuan School, in order to gain a clearer picture of the school. In the Southern Song Dynasty, there was not many records on the Aixuan School. Nonetheless, curiosity into the school did increase to some degree as time passed. This study will discuss why the once famous Aixuan School was not of such interest to later generations; a trend that is important to understand for those studying the subject. The latter half of this paper will focus on addressing the issues raised above. Internal problems and differences between how followers understood the teachings are the main reasons why the Aixuan School lost the level of fame it had in earlier times; factors not examined in previous studies.show more
