Abstract After the end of the Edo Era,at the beginning of the Meiji Era,Japan’s coal industry underwent a remarkable development and became the energy source that supported the advancement of the Industrial Re...volution. Unspecified workers from the coal mining cities searched for ways to cope with their harsh living situations and started expressing themselves through arts and cultural activities. Especially after the Second World War these activities in the cultural circle intensified. Recently, visual arts with a coalmine theme, created by coal mine workers, have been re-evaluated as ‘Cultural Resources’. “The Coal Mine as Cultural Resources ” exhibition was held in the Meguro Museum of Art in 2009. This exhibition, made it possible to rethink for the art of Coal Mine which has been alienated from the existing art history. This study revealed the relationship between induced acts of art,art works and the variable social backgrounds of the coalmines. These new findings include memories and diversified viewpoints that are different from the predominant history of the class of rulers. They contain important implications that can pass on the history and culture of the coal mine to the next generation.show more
