概要 Audification (an auditory display of vibrations outside of our hearing range) is one of the controversial issues in recent audio art. Seth Kim-Cohen criticizes that just making inaudible phenomena int...o sounds and listening to them does not improve our understanding of the real world, and such an approach remains within John Cage’s idea of “let sounds be themselves.” In this paper, I reexamine the concept of audification art to propose its new possibility. First, I introduce the theory of soundscape composition, which focuses on the context of environmental sounds, and point out that it often obscures the relationship between artwork and the real world because of the artist's subjective interpretation. Then, I discuss the audification art projects of David Dunn, John T. Bullitt, and Thomas Ashcraft, and show that they just aim to exhibit new environmental information based on relevant scientific knowledge, instead of expressing their artistic interpretation of it. In conclusion, I suggest that audification art has a possibility of mediating between nature and humans when its practice is rooted in both artistic and scientific perspectives.続きを見る
