Abstract Regional facilities that undergo daily use by local residents include community centers and assembly halls. While community centers are public facilities maintained by local governments for the purpos...es of providing a gathering place for regional residents within an elementary school district, assembly halls are unofficial facilities maintained by the joint investment of the members of an autonomous organization for the purposes of providing a gathering place for residents on smaller scales such as that of a neighborhood association. Many assembly halls were constructed during the period of rapid economic growth and have deteriorated to the point where they will soon need to be rebuilt. Various local governments across the country have instituted policies to support community interaction by subsidizing activities such as the repair and rebuilding of assembly halls. This paper will first contrast the policies of different local governments by examining the actual usage of their subsidies across the country, and reveal the ways in which the different subsidies have resulted in usage disparities. Furthermore, we will compare the architectural type of an assembly hall in Fukuoka City that provides a unique character to the scenery of the residential neighborhood with other assembly halls that have been covered by prominent architectural journals in order to reveal the differences in spatial structure. Ultimately, our aim is to examine the possibilities for a next-generation assembly hall based upon the coordinated efforts of both local governments and autonomous organizations.show more
