Abstract This paper aims to review past research concerning learning support for foreign residents in Japan, and also suggest proposals for the future. In reviewing previous studies, this paper will address th...e following three issues, 1) What problems do foreign residents encounter when learning Japanese? 2) How have they been supported by local Japanese classrooms? 3) Why autonomous learning is necessary for foreign residents in Japan? This review has brought to light three goals for future research, 1) To explore how female marriage migrants study Japanese. 2) To examine the positive aspects of autonomous Japanese learning. 3) To shed light on how these individuals gradually begin to participate in their local communities. This paper will lead to the development of a theoretical framework and a longitudinal survey being conducted, which will be carried out to achieve the three aims stated above.show more
