An Investigation into the Current Status of the Chinese word "Renjia"

Abstract The word "renjia" in Chinese speech is recognized as both a noun and a personal pronoun. If used as a noun it is read "rénjiā". This changes to "rénjia" when it used as a personal pronoun. "Renjia" ha...s undergone a transition across history; it's meaning changing gradually over time. Until the Tang dynasty "renjia" was only a noun; it's meaning and usage were limited. But after the Tang dynasty it began to be used as a personal pronoun, and its meaning and usage started to increase. This study looked at three contemporary novels, and used this large pool of data to clarify the meaning of "renjia" and how it is used in contemporary Chinese households. The following three trends have been identified with regards to the frequency with which the word is used, and how its meaning and use have transformed. 1) The frequency with which it is used has slowly decreased. 2) The frequency with which it is used to refer to other people has gradually increased. 3) As a noun, it's usage has gradually decreased.show more
