Abstract Vanadium-phosphorus mixed oxide catalysts (V-P-O) having P/V ratio of 2 have been investigated for the synthesis of maleic anhydride (MA) from butane. The V-P70 catalyst consisted of amorphous phase a...nd/or (VO) 2P4012 phase when the precursor VO (H2PO4)2 was calcined in the temperature range of 500-780℃. The V-P-O catalyst exhibited a good MA selectivity of 45-53 mol% in the butane oxidation at 470-500℃although butane conversion remained at a low level (<40mol%) because of the small specific surface area of the catalyst (1-2.5m2・g-1). The addition of metal cations modified the catalytic properties of amorphous V-P-O catalyst. Particularly, the MA yield was enhanced for the Co-added amorphous catalyst. On the other hand, metal cations could not be incorporated into the crystal lattice of (VO)2P4012 so that their addition hardly improved the catalytic properties of crystalline (VO)2P4012 catalyst.show more
