Abstract When a high-speed railway train enters a tunne1, a comparession wave is generated ahead of the train and propagates along the tunnel. This wave subsequently, emerges from the exit portal of the tunnel..., which causes an impulsive noise. In order to estimate the magnitudes of such noises, the mechanism of attenuation and distorition of a compression wave propagating in a tunnel must be understood. In the present paper, an experimental study is carried out to develop an open-ended shock tube with a fast opening gate valve instead of adiaphragm. This apparatus is called a wave simulator for a high-speed railway tunnel. The experimental results show that the opening time of a gate valve decreases with an increasing the initial pressure of the actuating chamber. The formation distance of a compression wave is about 12 times of a diameter of a tunnel simulator. The strength, maximum rate of pressure rise and length of wavefront are strongly dependent on the initial pressure of the actuating chamber and the opening speed of a gate valve.show more
