Abstract Cathodically hydrogen charged 304 and 316 stainless steels have been studied by means of x-ray diffraction, Both α' and ε martensites were formed by cathodic charging in solution treated samples, whil...e, very small amount of ε phase and additional α' phase were formed in cold-worked samples. ε and α' phases rever to γ phase below 723 and 923 K, respectively. The change of x-ray profiles during ageing comes from the change of the spatial distribution of hydrogen atoms. By fitting the observed profiles to those of calculated, the diffusion coefficient of hydrogen has been evaluated as 1.0×10-11 cm2 s-1, for both ε and γ phases.show more
