Abstract A fundamental study was carried out on a control of wave height distribution by multiple vertical cylinders in waves. Multiple scattering waves between cylinders are solved by the matrix method using ...a plane-wave approximation. Optimum configurations of the cylinders for wave convergence or making calm sea at the specified area are determined by the nonlinear programming. But, the initial values should be carefully determined in the nonlinear programming, because the last results strongly depend on them in these problems. Wave height distributions for optimum configurations of cylinders in waves are given graphically. Finally, observations are made of wave patterns around cylinders by the light projection method in a sha1low water tank. Observed wave patterns confirm the validity of the present calculations in comparison with numerical results.show more
