Abstract Low-temperature irradiation of methyl 2,4-dioxopentanoate with p-mentha-1,5-diene (alpha-phellandrene) gave retro-benzilic acid rearrangement products in low but reproducible yields, after a pyrolytic... workup, together with isomeric [4+2] cycloadducts. This indicates an accumulation of the proto-photocycloadducts during the reaction. The product analysis indicated the [2+2] and [4+2] cycloadditions are mutually independent processes.show more
