Abstract |
"MANGA"(story-comics) produced by Osamu Tezuka is a new culture Japan created. It is completely different media from the conventional "MANGA", and considered to be a new art. Nowadays in China this Ja...panese-borne story MANGA is named "SHIN-MANGA" or KATON(Cartoon)-GA""KOJI(story)MANGA", and recognized as a new culture. Furthermore, there occurs a positive movement to learn this "MANGA", and following this tendency, the national institution of 'Correspondence Courses on MANGA' was established in the spring of 2000. Now is the days when MANGA is accepted as an authentic art overseas. Kyushu Graduate School of Culture and Society opened a seminar course of MANGA-GAKU for the graduate students last year. In this paper I intend to inquire into Japanese MANGA basing on the fruit of this trend. Firstly, I observe the difference between "MANGA(new comics)"and "manga(old comics)", and argue about the reason why the former is "new" and also the difference between this MANGA and the American comics. Secondly, I survey the history of comic books in Japan, and give a brief survey on the evaluation on "SHIN-MANGA" in China. Lastly, I gave insights into why Japan has produced that highly developed MANGA culture, taking much consideration on the background of Japanese culture. Many things have yet to be left for further research in this filed. However, this paper, I am assured, will be a preliminary step in the right direction to the research on Japanese MANGA.show more
