Abstract In a barotropic system described by a forced-dissipative vorticity equation, quasi-periodic flow field appears in a certain parameter range. In this quasi-periodic flow, fluid particles are chaoticall...y mixed. In this study, such chaotic mixing by fluctuation of a jet is investigated using a channel-region model. Several features of the chaotic mixing which were found in studies with a spherical model are observed also in this channel model: the jet plays the role of a transport ``barrier'' which prohibits the particle from going across the jet axis, and even inside the mixed region, there exist regions where the particles do not enter. The asymmetry between the polar side and the equatorial side are realized also in a channel model with non-constant planetary vorticity gradient. This result suggests that it is the difference of planetary vorticity gradient, not the geometrical difference which causes the asymmetry of chaotic mixing between polar and equatorial sides.show more
