Abstract |
A new type of island rule is developed for the abyssal circulation of the Stommel-Arons scheme. The derivation and the resulting formulas are compared with those by Pedlosky, who showed how the stream... function of the abyssal circulation around a ridge with gaps is determined through the analysis of boundary layers associated with the ridge topography. The present derivation is much simpler without arguing the details of boundary layers, though their presence was assumed as in the theory of Stommel and Arons. Furthermore the present formulas apply to equatorial regions, in contrast to those of Pedlosky, which are based on the extratropical approximation of the quasi-geostrophic stream function. To examine the validity of the present island rule, numerical experiments were carried out with a diffusive reduced-gravity model, in which the upwelling velocity from the abyssal layer is not prescribed {it a priori}, but is determined autonomously through diffusive stretching.show more
