Abstract The evolutionary conditions in the dissipative magnetohydrodynamic(MHD)system are discussed, and the results are applied to argue stability of MHD intermediate shock waves. When dissipative wave modes... are included, arbitrary perturbations given to the shock can be expressed as a superposition of outgoing wave modes from the shock:thus, intermediate shocks may stably exist in dissipative MHD. In the limit of zero shock transition scale length, the matching conditions of incoming and outgoing wave modes at the shock give an under-determined set of equations, and a unique solution is defined only when an additional constraint such as the minimum dissipation principle is imposed. On the other hand, when a shock profile has a finite transition scale length, amplitude of each wave mode is always uniquely determined by requiring flux conservation at any local point during the shock transition. We illustrate this argument by giving some numerical examples. Using a test intermediate shock wave profile, we first evaluate the space-dependent dispersion relations of intermediate and dissipative wave modes. Then we compute spatial distribution of waves around the shock as incident intermediate waves are introduced upstream. It is shown that the locally generated dissipative wave modes around the shock, although very small amplitude in general, participate in matching of the perturbations, and that any perturbations given to the system are uniquely resolved as superposition of the intermediate and the dissipative waves, indicating that the intermediate shocks in dissipative MHD is evolutionary.show more
