Abstract This report describes the purpose of the Kyushu University Self-Access Learning Center (SALC), the activities it provides, and the challenges it is facing. The center was founded in 2014 as a facility... supplementing the English education curriculum and supporting autonomous active learning. It offers a wide variety of services, such as English conversation practice, language test practice and consultation concerning English education or studying abroad. The Center also provides study resources in the form of books, magazines and original printouts designed by the staff. Furthermore, SALC is involved in organizing informal study groups and events such as lectures or presentations, all of which are conducted in English. Since the creation of SALC, its services have been growing in popularity and the data for 2015 shows a sharp increase in the number of visitors compared to the previous year. In order to accommodate this growth, SALC has been expanding the size of its staff and flexibly responding to the suggestions of its users, implementing new systems such as book rental or time slot reservation, and organizing English language film screenings while providing tasks and explanations concerning the content. In the future, SALC must make an effort to maintain consistent guidelines on its activities and ensure the proper dissemination of such information among its staff. The Center will also need to respond to the growing demand for its services while striving to improve their quality and promote international cultural exchange by cooperating with institutions and groups both within Kyushu University and outside.show more
