Abstract This paper reports on a March 2015 study of the modernization of the traditional performing arts of Bali. The survey was carried out as part of the research project titled "Proposal of sustainable con...tents for the creation of local music culture from the perspective of integrating humanities and sciences." In Bali, which is known as "an island of art," or "an island of gods/' art and religion (Bali Hindu) are strongly linked. In particular, the performing arts developed in ceremonial festivals conducted primarily for religious reasons. However, the factor that resulted in the area becoming known as "an island of art" is the separation of the performing arts from ceremonial festivals, which increased the familiarity of tourists with these performances. The following changes were used to achieve this: 1) Performances of 1.5 hours in duration were lengthened to 2 hours, similar to Western concerts, 2) the performing arts were reconstructed with stories so the audience could discern the details of the performance; this resulted in an easier understanding of the storyline being portrayed by the music and dance, and 3) the stories selected were based on Hindu perspectives, thereby retaining Western people's adoration for Bali.show more
