Abstract Previous studies have paid much attention on the subject whether the knowledge of the listener is necessary or not when using a-series discourse demonstratives, but the answer is still unclear. In thi...s paper, cognitive research methods were employed to argue the relationship between the usage of a-series discourse demonstratives and the speaker's recognition of the listener. In addition, the definition of the shared knowledge was clarified and pointed out some problems in current researches. As revealed in this study, it is difficult to explain the usage of a-series discourse demonstratives without assuming the knowledge of the listener. The basic method for the usage of a-series discourse demonstratives is based on the direct knowledge of the speaker and the shared knowledge of the speaker and the listener. In conclusion, it is necessary to include the knowledge of the listener when using a-series discourse demonstratives.show more
