Abstract |
In his Bunsho-tokuhon, Mishima positions A pearl in Toledo of Prosper Merimee as an exemplar of Western short stories and Mateo Falcone of the same writer as a prototype of classic short stories. Mish...ima also cited the words of Merimee when he spoke of Hagakure, the thoughts of the samurai Jocho Yamamoto, which was his favorite book before his suicide. In these works of liberalist Merimee, which espouse ancient Greek thought, we can find descriptions of the samurai-spirited (chivalric) death and beauty which Mishima regards as ideals.show more
