Abstract |
In the Meiji era, contact with different cultures demanded new words and style. At that time, tanka with thirty-one syllables was discussed in a negative tone and there were constant movements of refo...rmation of tanka. Mokichi Saito was one reformer who made many such changes. Mokichi tried to give new life into existing words and revive this short poetic form by writing the tanka cycle Shinitamou Haha (The Dying Mother), a well- known work. In this paper, I will analyze the following tanka by tracing his new devices in this cycle: "mother,/my dying mother,/you gave me birth,/you fed me/with your rich milk!"
