Abstract |
Parallelism between the 'Dancing girl' (Elis) in Maihime and Elise Weigert, a friend of Ogai Mori's when he was in Germany, has been discussed as one of the basic subjects of study of Ogai. As one of ...his methods to deepen and strengthen his narrator's story about the dancing girl's image, Ogai uses quotations from Clara:or, Slave Life in Europe of W. F. Hacklander. Hacklander was the German writer that Ogai used to read. Ogai also translated two of Hacklander's stories into Japanese. Clara of Clara and Elis are the main characters that have so many similarities especially in their working conditions. Emphasizing the similarity between the two girls would be a new and illuminating approach to further researches.show more
