| Abstract |
Greatly influenced by the West, China started her process of modernization in the second half of the 19^<th> century. Surveys and studies concerning this phenomenon have been done in the past, especia...lly in utilizing the theory of Post-Colonialism. However, instead of simply gathering specific examples to show how much China has been influenced by the West, I think it is more important to know what the concepts from the West conflicted with in China and how they reconstructed their meanings when they were accepted into a country with a long history and where people have strong traditional values. It is from this starting point that I began research on "Eugenics" in China In the 1920s, many May Fourth intellectuals promoted "Eugenics" in their discourse advocating ethical revolution and social change. But at the same time, "Eugenics" was also promoted by intellectuals like Pan Guangdan, who believed that it was "Eugenics" that could justify the traditional values of the Chinese family. By focusing on Pan Guangdan's "China's Problems in Eugenics", I try to show what was really confronted with the different meanings of "Eugenics" in these discourses.show more
